University of Bristol engineer awarded with prestigous scholarship

November 2007

A talented engineer has been awarded a prestigious scholarship to study for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the elite INSEAD Business School in France.  Jonathan Selbie, who graduated from the University of Bristol, is one of nine talented young engineers who will benefit from more than £290,000 in funding awarded by the Royal Academy of Engineering on behalf of the Sainsbury Management Fellows.

The Sainsbury Management Fellowship Society (SMF) was set up by Lord Sainsbury to help the country’s top engineering graduates acquire the skills that will take them into the boardroom of Britain’s blue chip companies or set up enterprises that will boost the UK economy.

Jonathan, who has been working for the Red Bull Racing Formula One Team since completing a degree in Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol in June 2001, commented:

“I heard about the SMF bursary through a former colleague and, aside from the money, the networking opportunities sounded fantastic. Although I thought it was unlikely I would get it, there was no harm in applying, so I was delighted when I heard the good news! My main motivation for studying for a MBA is to learn business skills that will complement my technical qualifications in order to progress my professional career. I also hope to make new contacts and friends from the course, as well as meeting the rest of the SMF alumni.”

Dan Mutadich, President of the SMF, commented:

“Studying for an MBA at one of the world’s top business schools can cost as much as £50,000 in total, so it is our pleasure to be able to assist talented engineers such as Jonathan with this huge expense. This competitive award offers individuals with high potential the opportunity to complement their engineering qualifications with business skills that will open up exciting new opportunities in the business world.

“Not only will Jonathan have the qualifications to apply for senior management posts when he completes his MBA successfully, he will also join a network of over 220 SMFs, providing him with excellent contacts and resources which he can draw on in his future career. Many of these SMFs have gone on to achieve high profile success, either as business leaders or having set-up their own companies, demonstrating the value in helping develop engineers as leaders as the UK faces increasing global competition.”

Jonathan is aiming to graduate from INSEAD in July 2008. On completion of his MBA, he is considering starting his own venture.
