Engineers in Business Fellowship (EIBF) has awarded Sainsbury Management Fellows MBA Scholarships to eight talented young engineers to enable them to study for MBAs at top international business schools. The engineers will each receive £50,000. On graduation, the scholarship awardees will become Sainsbury Management Fellows (SMF) and join the SMF Alumni.

EIBF is a charity that champions and promotes business education for engineers. Through the MBA scholarship and its mentoring programme, EIBF helps engineers to gain broader business knowledge and skills. This enables them to secure senior management and board-level positions in blue-chip, entrepreneurial and not-for-profit organisations where they use their technical and business expertise to help improve performance and productivity and thus economic growth.

Sainsbury Management Fellows Scholarships were awarded to the following engineers who went through a stringent assessment process, including a panel interview with Sainsbury Management Fellows alongside members of the Royal Academy of Engineering:

Chris Holmes, Enrico Tranchina and Giovanni Sobrero are taking their MBAs at Imperial College Business School.

Jonathan Lister, Peter Kummer, Shrilekha Appicharla and Sanyam Mahajan are taking their MBAs at INSEAD.

Konstantinos Moustidis MEng, is studying at IMD Business School.

Commenting on the value of the scholarship, awardee Chris Holmes said, "The SMF Scholarship makes a significant difference to me. It will allow me to throw my full focus behind getting the most out of the MBA experience and developing my post MBA career in the energy sector. It will allow me to attend the school of my choice, Imperial College Business School, and give me the time to explore the opportunity of developing a start-up or new venture. The SMF Scholarship also allows me to join a large community of like-minded engineers and business people with whom I'm excited to meet and collaborate.”

The Sainsbury Management Fellows scholarship programme was established by Lord Sainsbury of Turville to ensure that more executives in UK boardrooms have both technology and effective management skills.

This potent mix of engineering and business skills are proving successful as the Sainsbury Management Fellows are making a difference in society. To date, Fellows have founded more than 300 new companies worth £4.8 billion, created more than 20,000 new jobs and are helping to develop some of the UK’s largest corporations.

In addition, the vast majority of the 375 Sainsbury Management Fellows support and mentor young engineers, helping them to develop their careers and business ventures.

What Scholarship Awardees Say

The scholarship winners share their thoughts and experiences on their path to taking an MBA and how they will use their business education to further their careers and make a difference in society.
